The strongest argument for same-sex marriage (SSM) is: ‘Why shouldn’t you be able to marry the person you love?’
This question is powerful, but it assumes marriage is just recognition of love and personal happiness.
Traditional marriage is for the purposes of procreation, holy living with natural instincts, and lifelong faithful companionship.
The marriage of a man and a woman is the one relationship on earth with the power to create and nurture one’s own children. This relationship deserves its own name and status as the basis of humanity’s ongoing story.
That’s not to say there is no place for love in marriage, of course! But marriage is far bigger than love. It is for the good of society. It’s not a private issue, it’s very public.
For this reason there are gay people who oppose SSM, and ancient cultures very happy with same-sex relationships but completely against SSM.
