One little word can change the world. In our Bible passage today it is the word ‘but’:
Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace you have been saved (Ephesians 2:4–5).
Is there a more amazing ‘but’ imaginable?
From death in sin to life in Christ… that ‘but’ changed the world forever for all those in Christ.
Our salvation is all about the grace of God – God, who is rich in mercy. As we read last week in Ephesians 1:1–14, God’s plan of salvation for his creation is all for the praise of his glory. There is nothing we can boast about or claim credit for.
We all know that dead people can’t bring themselves back to life. Stand at the cemetery and scream out as loud as your lungs can: ‘Come back to life!’
…and nothing will happen. Only God can give life to a dead body. And that is what he has done in Christ.
God made us alive with Christ. There is no life outside of Christ. And so the only response that leaves us with is to praise God and thank him for his grace to us in Christ.
